Living on a small island with big ideas, Kathryn is inspired by the diverse creative spirit of her community.
From acrobats to poets, culinary craftspeople to lauded oil painters, puppeteers to farming geniuses, the place she calls
home seems to bring out the artist in everyone. The following programs feed her muse.

Vashon-Maury Island Audubon
|
The mission of Vashon-Maury Island Audubon is one with Kathryn's own: "to enjoy, learn about, and preserve the diverse natural habitats
of these islands and beyond." Programs include a beginning birding program for 4th graders and monthly birding field trips. Kathryn
is co-chair of education.
In partnership with Tara Vanselow, Kathryn facilitates
a book club for 8 to 11-year-olds and their parents. The club meets the first Monday of each month at Vashon Bookshop.
Selections inlcude Abel's Island by William Steig, Island of the Aunts by Eva Ibbotson, and Gooseberry
Park by Cynthia Rylant. The kids complete a craft related to the book, share their favorite reading moments and finish
up with a themed snack. For more information on how to start your own kids' book club, write to ktrue@centurytel.net.
The Lorax Club: An Environmental Program for Youth
|
Teaming with Claudia Gross-Shader, in fall 2006 Kathryn facilitated an
environmental club for homeschooling children and other interested families. Sponsored by Family Link and Vashon-Maury Island Audubon, club members explored four island ecosystems with local experts. In 2007 Kathryn will lead
a Lorax Club birding session at a local pond.
